An Overview of Binfer 6 Server Settings

Binfer’s advanced server settings allow for greater flexibility and functionality when using the Binfer 6 product. Below is an overview of all settings options.

COMPRESSION: When this setting is enabled, compression will be applied on the received files. Each device that needs received files to be compressed must set the compression level in the settings section of that specific device. Compression levels vary between 0 and 9, with “0” meaning no compression and “9” being the highest level of compression. The higher the level of compression, the more rigorously the compressor will attempt to compress the file, which will result in higher CPU usage. For typical textual input, compressing at the maximum as opposed to the minimum level adds around 5% to the compression ratio.

DATABASE: This section enables systems admins to view the current size of the Binfer Server database. The more files that are transferred, the larger this database will grow. It is recommended that the database be backed up periodically to a secondary location for DR purposes.

DOWNLOADS: The default download location can be identified or changed within the downloads section. This is the default location that all files received to the server will be stored unless otherwise indicated. Version control settings allow for files to be either overwritten or backed up based on preference.

NETWORK: The Network section provides a flexible way to configure network settings as needed. This includes port number, domain name, enable HTTPS, bandwidth throttling, and encryption. This is also where the “Test URL” can be found, which is used to verify that a port is open through the firewall, enabling outside Binfer clients to connect to the server.

REPORTS: The reports section allows XML reports to be generated at predefined intervals. Additional file transfer API reporting features report every file sent, received or failed as it gets done. All API responses are encoded as strings from their native data types. They can be converted to specific data types. The data types are as per Java data types (see:

SECURITY: Allows system admins to either enable or disable guest access to the central management console. Guest access allows outside parties to have low permission level access to view reports.

UPDATES: As new versions of Binfer 6 become available, the updates module enables fast and easy deployment across the server and clients. Server updates require a restart, which is why updates are not scheduled. Instead, the updates module allows the system admin to trigger the update at a convenient time. If there is a new version available, the “Install Latest Version” button will appear. When clicked, an easy walkthrough will guide the system admin through the update process.
